First things first, the only thing that’s holding you back from achieving massive success like Beyonce is you. Success takes persistence, hard work, commitment and most importantlypersonal branding. If you don’t know now you know. Personal branding is the ultimate key to your career success. What better way to teach you about personal branding than Beyonce. A world acclaimed singer, who has achieved massive success from sold out concerts, to grammy’s, to a clothing line. Girl, she does it all and YOU can too but you have to have a personal brand. Now let me “upgrade you”. Create your Sasha Fierce, Beyonce’s alter ego. It gives you permission to let yourself truly go after what you want. Let’s get started, here are your 5 steps to brand it like Beyonce.
Develop a Mission Statement. What does your personal brand represent? What are your short term and long term goals? Goals motivate us, they keep us on track, and they get us results. What is your purpose for walking into the office each day? What do you want to accomplish? Beyonce began her career in Destiny’s child and later began her own successful solo career. There were steps along the way. What steps are you taking to create your long term goals?
Dress the part. Your style is a physical representation of your brand. Think Beyonce, she’s an entertainer and a fashion designer. When she is making a public appearance she’s dressed to the nines and wants people to see her as a fashion icon. Think about it, if you thought her fashion sucked why would you buy her clothing line? How you dress is how people see you. If you want to be taken seriously in a board room, iron your clothes, doYOUR HAIR, show up the way you want to be seen. Bonus, when we feel good about ourselves and the way we look it’s an instant confidence booster.
Know your audience and create a devoted following. “Independent Women,” “Single Ladies,” “Run the World (Girls),” are all hits done by Beyonce. Why? Because the Queen B knows what her Beyhive wants. What or who does your brand serve? This is a critical component that you need to be able to answer so you can make decisions and determine your own strategies. Who is your audience? Who are the people around you that can help your success? Create a power team of devoted fans that you attract from the amazing work that you do. Find people that love you so much and would go to bat for you, just like Kanye West did at the Grammy’s to Beck and Taylor Swift.
Think of Yourself as a Public Figure. From this point on consider yourself a public image. Based on your image bosses will make decisions about your career, whether or not they will invest in your or offer youJOB OPPORTUNITIES or special assignments. Perception is key. Think of yourself as your own PR agent, and do what you can to get good press so you can be rewarded with success. Keep your personal life private at work. If it’s not relevant to the job at hand, keep it private. Think Jay Z and Solange’s epic elevator fight, Beyonce made no comments. Why? Because it has nothing to do with her singing career and it’s frankly not anyone’s business. Be mindful of the weight of your words and steer clear of the gossip, it’s only a distraction that can damage your brand.
Evolve. Stay relevant. Be informed on any changes within your industry, strategy changes, or new research. Don’t be late for the party, be the party starter. That is be on the one who is informed, educated and can make decisions based on the future. In any industry change is necessary, you have to be willing to be open to new ideas and developmental opportunities that can keep you on par with the change so you canCONTINUE to deliver the optimal results. Beyonce’s solo career evolved from “Crazy in Love” to “Drunk in Love”. She was able to build her audience early on and now with more success she has greater flexibility to take risks with her song writing.
Be willing to take risks to grow your brand. Success exists within our ability to grow and challenge ourselves. If you’re starting out, create your personal brand and know that your independence and success will only grow from there. Now get out there and create your Sasha Fierce.
